Both ATF and Philadelphia police can’t corroborate Biden’s AR-15 claims
During the National Safer Communities Summit in June, President Joe Biden claimed people in Philadelphia were selling AR-15s out of trucks. It was a preposterous claim predicated on hysteria and misinformation. Biden said it to appeal to his audience and anti-gun-loving base. Yet I knew his statements were not based on reality. Recently, I contacted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Philadelphia Police Department, and they confirmed that they couldn’t corroborate Biden’s claim that AR-15s sold out of trucks.
“And in most cities, down in Philadelphia and New York, areas I know well, like up here, you’d see a truck pull up, pull to the curb, and selling weapons — selling guns, selling AR-15, selling weapons,” Biden said.

As a lifelong Philadelphia resident in the area who witnessed a drive-by shooting a month ago, I had never seen anything close to what Biden described and knew it was untrue. After discussing Biden’s assertion with friends and family members, many former police officers, I contacted the Philadelphia Police Department. I asked if the department had any record of AR-15s being sold out of trucks in the city.
First, I was informed that my request was received and told that the Philadelphia Police Department would notify me “as soon as we receive a confirmation of yes/no.” I hadn’t heard anything a few days later, so I decided to follow up. Shortly after, the PPD confirmed my beliefs and said Biden’s claim was incorrect.
“Not aware of anything at this time. You may want to contact ATF to see if they have anything,” the PPD Office of Public Affairs told me.
I then contacted ATF and asked it the same question. It also replied that it was unable to confirm Biden’s claim.
“ATF is unable to speculate on the frequency of AR-type rifle sales from trucks nationwide or within the Philadelphia area,” the deputy chief of the Public Affairs Division told me.
Two different law enforcement agencies said they could not corroborate Biden’s claim about AR-15s being sold out of trucks. No evidence appears to exist of this, yet Biden still made this claim in front of a crowd of concerned parents. Why? This does nothing but scare people and advance false and incorrect information.
As is often the case with what Biden says, the truth is very different from what comes out of his mouth, and it is something that Biden does regularly. For a president supposedly concerned with the spread of misinformation, Biden does an awful lot of it — especially when advancing his political agenda.
